orange sky.

The sea beneath my feet felt unusually warm. The horizon looked soft and blurred, almost as though someone had taken a paintbrush to the landscape, turning the morning into something resembling a Monet masterpiece.

Then I started thinking...

Is it just me, or does the Mediterranean feel different this year?

The answer is both simple and surprisingly complex.

To understand what’s happening here in Mallorca, we need to travel over 15,000 kilometres away to the tropical Pacific Ocean.

It all starts in the Pacific...

Imagine the Pacific Ocean as a giant bath.

Under normal conditions, strong trade winds push warm surface water west towards Indonesia and Australia. This allows cooler, nutrient-rich water to rise near the west coast of South America.

Every few years those trade winds weaken.

The warm water begins to drift back east, changing where heat is stored in the ocean and where huge storm systems develop.

This phenomenon is known as El Niño.

Although it happens on the other side of the world, it changes the way heat moves through our atmosphere.

Think of dropping a pebble into a still lake.

The splash happens in one place...

but the ripples spread much further.

Our atmosphere works in a similar way.

So why does Mallorca care?

El Niño doesn’t directly control the weather in Mallorca.

Instead, it changes the odds.

It influences large-scale atmospheric circulation, making certain weather patterns more likely across different parts of the world.

At the same time, our warming climate is already raising ocean and air temperatures.

The result is that natural climate cycles like El Niño are now occurring on top of an already warmer planet.

The Mediterranean feels different...

If you’ve spent any time on the water this summer, you’ve probably noticed it too.

The sea feels unusually warm.

The air feels heavier.

The humidity seems higher.

Even the breeze doesn’t always provide the relief we’re used to.

That’s because the Mediterranean acts like a giant heat store.

As the sea warms, more water evaporates into the atmosphere.

That moisture doesn’t disappear.

It stays in the air around us.

When the afternoon sea breeze arrives, it’s carrying warm, moisture-rich air instead of the cooler, refreshing breeze we often associate with summer.

That’s why temperatures can feel much hotter than the thermometer suggests.

From my paddleboard...

One of the biggest things I’ve noticed this year isn’t actually the temperature.

It’s the wind.

Normally, living and working on the water, you begin to understand the familiar rhythm of Mallorca’s weather.

Calm mornings.

The afternoon Embat.

The occasional Tramuntana.

This summer has felt different.

We’ve experienced more days influenced by northerly winds such as the Tramuntana and Mistral, and there have been occasions where the wind has changed direction several times during the day.

For anyone spending time on the water, it has made conditions feel noticeably less predictable.

Whether that’s down to El Niño alone? Almost certainly not.

Mallorca’s weather is shaped by many different influences, from local pressure systems and Mediterranean sea temperatures to our mountain landscape and larger atmospheric patterns.

But as someone who spends hundreds of mornings on these waters every year, this has certainly been one of the more unusual summers I’ve experienced.

More than just warmer water...

Warmer seas don’t just affect swimmers.

They influence marine life too.

Scientists continue to study how prolonged marine heat affects Posidonia seagrass, fish behaviour, jellyfish populations and the wider Mediterranean ecosystem.

Everything in the sea is connected.

And those incredible sunrises?

Many people have commented on this summer’s spectacular orange skies.

They’re not caused by El Niño alone.

Instead they’re the result of several ingredients coming together.

Warm stable air.

High pressure.

Humidity.

Saharan dust (Calima).

Together they scatter sunlight differently, creating the soft pastel colours we’ve all been enjoying.

Some mornings really have looked more like paintings than photographs.

Everything is connected

One of the reasons I love paddleboarding is that it constantly reminds me how connected our planet really is.

Standing quietly on the Mediterranean at sunrise, it’s easy to think you’re experiencing something purely local.

But that peaceful moment has been shaped by ocean temperatures, atmospheric circulation and climate systems stretching right around the world.

A sunrise in Port de Pollença doesn’t begin in Mallorca.

In many ways...

it begins in the Pacific.

And perhaps that’s the greatest lesson the sea teaches us.

The more we understand it...

the more we realise that everything is connected.

Subscribe now

Maluhia a me ke aloha (peace and love)

Hanna Tramuntana

Hannah Louise López is the founder of Mallorca SUPCO and Oceans Connected Mallorca. Sometimes people want easy. Sometimes they want to switch off, relax and not have to think about anything for a few days.

But for me, the words all-inclusive mean something entirely different.

Yesterday morning, as the sun began to rise over the Bay of Pollença, I looked around at the group paddling alongside me.

There were children, mums, dads, friends and couples. There were English voices, Spanish voices and plenty of laughter in between. There were people with different levels of experience, different reasons for being there and different ways of enjoying the water.

There was even a dog.

And as we watched the sky slowly change colour, it struck me that this was my version of all inclusive.

Not everyone being offered exactly the same experience, but everyone being made to feel that the experience could belong to them.

That distinction matters.

Inclusivity is not simply inviting everybody and hoping they can fit into what already exists. It is creating something flexible enough, welcoming enough and thoughtful enough that different people can genuinely take part.

Paddleboarding is often presented as an adventurous sport for the young, the fit and the fearless. Social media does not always help. We see images of athletic people standing perfectly balanced on boards, paddling across glassy tropical water without a wobble in sight.

The reality is much more human.

People arrive feeling nervous. Some are worried about falling in. Some are worried they will be too slow. Some think they are too old, too unfit or too uncoordinated. Some have tried paddleboarding before and had a bad experience. Some are confident swimmers, while others simply want to stay seated and enjoy being on the sea.

Children approach the water differently from adults. Families move at a different pace from experienced paddlers. Couples often want time to enjoy the moment together, while friends may spend half the session trying to make each other fall in.

And dogs, naturally, make up their own rules entirely.

That is the beauty of it.

There is no single correct way to enjoy the water.

You can stand. You can kneel. You can sit. You can paddle fast, paddle slowly, stop to watch the sunrise or simply float for a while and take everything in.

The sea does not ask where you come from, how old you are, what language you speak or whether you look like the people in the glossy adventure brochures.

It simply invites you in.

My role is to make sure that invitation feels safe, accessible and genuine.

That has always been at the heart of Mallorca SUP Company.

Of course, safety comes first. We work with the conditions, not against them. We keep groups manageable, adapt the route and pace, and make sure people feel supported rather than pressured.

But beyond the practical side, there is something equally important: people need to feel welcome.

They need to know that they do not have to prove anything.

They do not have to be the strongest paddler in the group. They do not have to stand up immediately. They do not have to keep pace with somebody younger, fitter or more experienced.

They only have to be present.

Yesterday’s sunrise paddle captured that perfectly.

The group was mixed in almost every possible way, yet nobody felt out of place. Everyone shared the same horizon, the same calm morning water and the same sense that they were part of something special.

That is what the best experiences do.

They bring people together without asking them to become the same.

For me, inclusivity is not a marketing phrase. It is not a box to tick or a word to add to a website.

It is a way of working.

It means noticing who might be feeling unsure. It means making adjustments without making somebody feel like a problem. It means creating space for people to experience the water in the way that works for them.

It also means understanding that adventure looks different for everybody.

For one person, adventure might mean paddling several kilometres along the coast.

For another, it might mean standing on a board for the first time.

For somebody else, it might simply mean stepping onto the water despite being nervous.

All of those moments matter.

There is a tendency in tourism to package experiences into something polished, standardised and repeatable. Same timetable. Same route. Same expectations.

But nature does not work like that, and neither do people.

Every sunrise is different. Every group is different. Every person who joins us brings their own story, energy and reason for being there.

That is why the most memorable mornings are rarely the ones where everything looks perfect.

They are the ones filled with nervous laughter, unexpected conversations, children asking a hundred questions, friends cheering each other on, dogs moving around the board at precisely the wrong moment and people surprising themselves.

They are the mornings when strangers start talking and families share an experience they will remember long after the holiday is over.

They are the mornings when everybody belongs.

So, what does all-inclusive mean to me?

It means children, parents, couples, friends, visitors, locals, beginners, experienced paddlers and the occasional four-legged passenger.

It means different languages, different abilities and different reasons for stepping onto the water.

It means making the sea feel open rather than exclusive.

It means helping people understand that paddleboarding is not only for a certain type of person.

It is for anyone who wants to experience the freedom, calm and joy of being out there.

Yesterday morning was not all inclusive because everybody received unlimited food and drinks.

It was all inclusive because everybody had a place.

And honestly, I cannot think of a better definition than that.

Maluhia a me ke aloha (peace and love)

Hanna Tramuntana

Hannah Louise López is the founder of Mallorca SUPCO and Oceans Connected Mallorca. — and helped shape the idea behind Mallorca SUPCO in the first place.

For someone living with ADHD, racing thoughts, or anxiety that can overwhelm, the combination of movement, fresh air, open space and the gentle rhythm of the water can offer something incredibly powerful: a chance to pause, reset and come back to the present.

Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all experience. Neurodiversity is not something that needs fixing, and what feels calming or supportive for one person may feel very different for another.

But when conditions are right, time on the water can create a wonderfully supportive environment — one that allows people to move at their own pace, feel connected to nature and simply be themselves.

So, why can interacting with water help?

The sea has its own rhythm

Life on land can be noisy, fast and full of demands. Traffic. Phones. Conversations. Bright lights. Crowded spaces. Instructions. Expectations. The constant feeling of needing to keep up.

Out on the water, much of that falls away. The gentle movement of the board, the rhythm of the paddle, the sound of the sea and the space around you can create a calmer sensory environment. There is still plenty to notice — the sun on your skin, the movement beneath your feet, the birds overhead and the changing colours of the water — but it is often a more natural and predictable kind of sensory input.

For some people, that rhythm can feel grounding. For others, it can provide just enough stimulation to feel more present, focused and settled.

Paddle boarding gives the brain one clear job

When you are on a paddleboard, your attention naturally comes back to the here and now.

Where is my body?
How is the board moving?
What is the wind doing?
Where am I placing my paddle?
What can I see beneath me?

It is difficult to be everywhere at once when you are gently balancing on the sea.

That does not mean your thoughts magically disappear, but paddle boarding can create a welcome pause from overthinking, rumination and the background noise of everyday life. The brain is given a simple, physical task: move, balance, breathe and notice.

For many people, it feels a little like meditation — without having to sit still and try to meditate.

Movement can help us regulate

We are not designed to spend all day sitting still, staring at screens and trying to force our brains into one particular pace.

Paddle boarding brings together steady movement, balance, coordination and fresh air. It can be energising when you need to release restless energy, but calming when you need to slow things down.

There is no treadmill. No whistle. No crowded gym. No pressure to keep up with anyone else.

You can paddle gently. You can sit down. You can kneel. You can lie back on the board and look at the clouds. You can laugh when you wobble. You can go at your own pace.

That freedom matters.

Blue space gives us room to breathe

There is something about being near water that changes the way many of us feel.

Maybe it is the horizon. Maybe it is the sound. Maybe it is the fact that the sea does not ask anything from us.

On a board, you are away from the usual walls, roads, queues and routines. You have space around you. You can see further. You can breathe deeper. You can look down and spot fish, jellyfish, Posidonia or simply the shifting light beneath your board.

For people who feel overwhelmed by busy environments, that sense of space can be a huge relief.

And for people who spend a lot of time feeling misunderstood, judged or expected to fit into a particular box, the ocean can feel wonderfully neutral.

You do not have to perform on the sea. You just have to be there.

Confidence grows quietly

Paddle boarding is full of small wins.

The first time you stand up.
The first time you paddle in a straight line.
The first time you wobble but stay on.
The first time you fall in and realise it is actually quite funny.
The first time you look back at the beach and think, I did that.

Those moments can build confidence in a very natural way.

Not loud, competitive, “look at me” confidence. More the quiet kind:

I can try new things.
I can trust my body.
I can work things out.
I am capable.

That feeling can travel far beyond the board.

Connection — without the pressure

Paddle boarding can be beautifully social, but it does not have to be intense.

You can paddle quietly alongside someone without needing constant conversation. You can share a sunrise with a group, laugh together when somebody takes an unexpected swim, or simply enjoy being part of something without feeling the pressure to be “on”.

For some people, that side-by-side connection can feel much easier than sitting face-to-face in a noisy café or trying to make small talk in a busy room.

The sea gives people something else to focus on together: the light, the wildlife, the next little bay or the feeling of the board moving beneath their feet.

Sometimes connection happens best when nobody is trying too hard.

Inclusion is not an add-on

At Mallorca SUPCO, we believe that the water should be for everyone.

That is why we have created different ways for people to take part, depending on what feels right for them.

Our adaptive seats from our friends at Fatstick offer a more supported way to paddle, while Big Ron — our large, stable paddleboard — allows for shared experiences with extra reassurance and support.

Some people may prefer a quieter session. Some may need more time. Some may want clear instructions before getting on the water. Some may feel more comfortable sitting or kneeling rather than standing. Some may simply need to know that falling in is not the end of the world.

All of that is okay.

The best paddleboarding experience is not about making everybody do the same thing. It is about meeting people where they are, working with their strengths and creating an experience that feels safe, enjoyable and empowering.

The sea is not a therapy room — but it can be therapeutic. Paddle boarding is not a replacement for clinical support, therapy or medical care. But it can be a brilliant tool for wellbeing.

For some people, it is a chance to release energy. For others, it is a chance to find stillness. For some, it is about building strength and balance. For others, it is about reconnecting with nature, finding confidence or remembering what joy feels like. Often, it is all of those things at once.

At the heart of it, paddle boarding offers something wonderfully simple: a board, a paddle, a patch of blue space and the freedom to move through the world in your own way.

And sometimes, that is exactly what we need.

Because the ocean does not ask us to be less ourselves. It simply gives us room to be more of who we already are.

Subscribe now

Maluhia a me ke aloha (peace and love)
Hanna Tramuntana

Hannah Louise López is the founder of Mallorca SUPCO and Oceans Connected Mallorca.
